Recreation and Parks

While not directly "City-sponsored and fielded" teams, Live Oak is very happy that the Live Oak Dolphins, Live Oak Jaguars and the Greater Randolph Little League are a positive part of our community and choose to use our facilities!

Parks and Recreation Commission Volunteer of the Quarter Click link for PHOTO! - On October 14, 2008, Mayor Painter joined Parks and Recreation Committee Chairman Mario Ward in presenting an award to volunteer Garry Lally for his help with numerous parks events. Mr. Ward praised Mr. Lally for his silent support and his ability to recognize what needed to be done.

Live Oak Dolphins Swim Team - The Live Oak Dolphins is a local swim team that offers kids a chance to develop and realize life-saving skills, self-confidence, teamwork, discipline and community involvement in a positive, adult-supervised atmosphere. The Dolphins members are ambassadors of our city, bearing its namesake and showcasing their fine talents and qualities to the cities and communities that surround us. Team activities are dormant until springtime.

Park Appreciation Day Event Coverage AVAILABLE Click link for PHOTO! - Live Oak had an outstanding turn-out for its Park Day celebrated on April 12th. The weather was beautiful and many residents participated in children games, enjoyed music, and shopped local craft merchants. The many food vendors provided treats and the evening finished with live music from Two Tons of Steel band. Live Oak resident Clark Curnutt, “JCSC Chili” was the grand prize winner of the Chili Cookoff Contest. JP Carrasco chili, “Ojo Negro” won first prize winner in Showmanship. Billie Allen’s, “My Best Friend’s a Cater” chili won the People’s Choice. (Many thanks to Scott Wayman for providing the photos!) Live Oak has a disk golf course! Look! - Disc golf combines a favorite modern pastime - disc throwing - with one of the world's great games - golf. Players count how many "strokes" (throws) it takes to get from the tee to the hole, which is a numbered yellow basket.

Players commonly use special golf discs designed for drives, approach shots, and putts (drivers can fly over 200 feet!), but any disc may be used. Most golf discs cost $7 - $8, making disc golf a very affordable game.

It's easy to see why thousands of new players take up disc golf every year. It's a fun, healthful family game, and an 18-hole round generally takes less than two hours to play.

Click on the link and print your own score card to take with you to the course! Have fun!

Live Oak Village Garden Club - The non-profit Live Oak Village Garden Club (LOVGC) was chartered in Live Oak by five individuals March 16, 1981, and federated September 1, 1981. The club is a member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc, The Texas Garden Club, Inc, District VII - The East Zone. The club also belongs to the San Antonio Garden Center, Inc. and meets with them every first Wednesday of the month.

The Live Oak Village Garden Club presently has 17 members and meets from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M. the third Tuesday of each month, September through May, at the Live Oak Clubhouse. No meetings are held during June, July and August. Each meeting consists of a speaker who presents a program concerning gardening or related subjects of interest to club members, refreshments served by scheduled hostesses, followed by a club meeting chaired by the club president.

Since 1998, the club has been working with the Live Oak Public Works Department to beautify city owned land located at Toepperwein Road, Sage Oak Drive, and Judson Road. Great progress has been made to make what was once barren land into a lush and attractive place for Live Oak residents. Current members are interested in working solely on making the club a larger and stronger group and using our efforts toward our area in Northeast San Antonio and the City of Live Oak. On December 20, 2005, a sign which recognized Garden Club members' efforts and diligent hard work was dedicated and unveiled at the Live Oak Xeriscape Gardens.

We encourage anyone interested in gardening to take advantage of these activities. If you would like more information concerning LOVGC, please call Frances A. Keller, President, at 657-0850.
