Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week is an annual event marking the anniversary of the “Great Chicago Fire,” which occurred in 1871. This year Fire Prevention Week will be celebrated from October 7th, 2007 – October 13th, 2007, the week that includes October 9th, the day of the Chicago fire.

As usual, the members of the Live Oak Fire Department will be very busy that week visiting both of our elementary schools along with all of the day care centers in the City. Closing out the week will be the annual Fire Prevention Week Parade on Saturday afternoon, October 13th, 2007, beginning at 2:00 PM. As always, the parade will start by the Northeast Methodist Hospital. It will proceed down Village Oak Drive; turn right on Lone Shadow Trail; left on Old Spanish Trail, and then right onto Shin Oak Drive, ending at the Live Oak Fire Station at the corner of Shin Oak Drive and Oak Terrace Drive.

A poster contest will be conducted as usual at Ed Franz Elementary School and Crestview Elementary School, and trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in all grades at both schools. This brings us to the final event of the week – the poster contest awards ceremony at 7:00 PM, at Ed Franz Elementary School.

Each year a theme is chosen for Fire Prevention Week by The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and this year the focus will be on not only having a family fire escape plan, but actually practicing it. The theme for this year is “Practice Your Escape Plan.” In addition to using that theme for the annual poster contest, something new has been added this year. During Fire Prevention Week the association is hoping to get everyone across the nation to participate in “The Great American Fire Drill.”

According to a recent poll, the majority of Americans have developed a fire escape plan for their home, however many families have never practiced it. In addition, almost three-quarters of the people surveyed believe they have up to ten minutes to safely escape before a fire turns deadly. Needless to say that just isn’t so!

To learn more about this program you are encouraged to visit the web site of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and read all about the program for this year. A direct link is included below however their web site URL is www.nfpa.org . On the opening page click on the Fire Prevention Week icon and you're in.

All Live Oak residents are encouraged to participate in the “Great American Fire Drill” on Wednesday evening, October 10th, 2007. Members of the Live Oak Fire Department will be out in the City visiting with families who have practiced their escape plans. In order to participate, here is what you need to do.

Step Number 1: Download a copy of The Fire Escape Plan using the link provided.

Step Number 2: A special web site has been created by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) that lets you register and be counted, and then enables you to print a fancy certificate showing you were part of the program. The site has been linked and it is: http://sparky.org/form/ . Since this program is aimed towards our children the site asks for a first name and age. The instructions are very simply and easy to follow.

Step Number 3. Contact the fire department using one of the following methods to register:

  • Call the Fire Department at 653-9140, Extension 244.
  • Visit the Fire Station during normal business hours – 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
  • Send an e-mail to: FireDrill@ci.live-oak.tx.us When you call or e-mail us we need the following information:
  • Your Name
  • Address
  • Telephone Number (In case we need to contact you) NOTE: You must be pre-registered at the NFPA web site (http://sparky.org/form/) and have your certificate to sign up for the fire department visit.

On that Wednesday evening, October 10th, 2007, members of the department hope to visit everyone who signed up and we will review your plan and insure it is complete. They will be out in the City between the hours of 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM.

If you have any questions pertaining to this program or Fire Prevention Week, please contact Assistant Fire Chief Gerry Galindo at 653-9140, Extension 243 or via e-mail at the link provided. Any groups or organizations wishing to participate in the parade should also contact Assistant Chief Galindo.
