Message from the Chief

The Live Oak Police Department strives to provide professional police services to the Live Oak community, thus establishing a safe environment for all who live, work, shop and play here.  As our department moves into the future, we will continue to implement strategies to reduce crime and improve the quality of life in our community.

The department is a premiere Texas law enforcement agency and is comprised of 50 sworn and civilian employees. We provide cutting edge policing initiatives for our community, which is the northeast gateway community to the City of San Antonio.

In April 2010, the department recieved the Best of the Metrocom distinction from the readers of the Northeast Herald.  This is a tribute to the department as no other law enforcement agency has received this award before.  The award was made possible by the hard work and dedication of all police employees.

We are proud of our reputation of providing a high quality of service.  This is only possible through the hard work and dedication of our employees; the support provided by the community; and the support of our appointed and elected officials.  These relationships serve as the vehicle by which our officers are able to identify the root causes of crime instead of just treating the symptoms.

Throughout my service with the department, I have been pleased with the police employee's continued dedication of providing a high quality of service.  This continued committment has made Live Oak one of the safest cities in Texas.

WHAT'S NEW

Sergeant John Stakes Retires from the City of Live Oak
John Stakes, a long-time Live Oak city employee and former city resident, has decided to take off the badge and hang up his guns.  After a little more than 30 years of combined service in fighting crime in the City and serving the citizens of Live Oak well, Sergeant John Stakes retired on August 10, 2010.

John was recognized by city council and department heads during the August 10, 2010, regular session of city council.  John received a City Council Proclamation recognizing him for he service to the city.  John said for the reason for his departure, "The time is right and the department is in good hands."

Beginning his career with the City as a reserve police officer in 1980, Chief Echols said, "John was more than just an employee.  He was iconic.  People in the community knew him personally and if they didn't know, they at least knew of him."  Stakes held several positions and performed numerous assignments throughout his tenure in the police department.

John and his wife, Paula, lived in the city during his career and reared their children here.  John will be sorely missed by his fellow employees and residents.  The members of the department are happy for him and wish him well for the future.
